Tutor Certification

American Tutoring Association's unique Tutor Certification program is quickly becoming the national standard. Our Certification process is intensive and assures parents and teachers and other tutoring organziations the tutor they are using has the content knowledge, ability to communicate and integrity to work as a private tutor.

The Basic Certification process consists of the following five check points:

  • Initial Standards Screening: Must have minimum Bachelor's Degree and minimum one year's teaching/tutoring experience.(or ATA approved equivelent)**
  • Initial Interveiw: Speak with a recruiter about experience and ability to communicate well with students.
  • Reference Verification: Recruiter will check two professional references in the are of education to verify content knowledge and ability to teach.
  • Written Reference: Provide one written letter of recommendation.
  • Criminal Background Check: Three-tier criminal background check, including Department of Corrections, Social Security Verification, and Sex Offender Listing Check.

**If you have a high school diploma but lack the minimum education or experience required by the ATA, we have approved a tutor training program that will give you the necessary education and experience for ATA Certification. Click here for more information.

Master Level Certification Opportunities:

Master Level Certification Opportunities are available in three increments:

Master Bronze: Completion of Basic Certification + 100 hours of verified, successful tutoring.

Master Silver: Completion of Basic Certification +200 hours of verified, successful tutoring.

Master Gold: Completion of Basic Certification + 300 hours of verified, successful tutoring.

Tutor must provide ATA with proof of sessions. ATA will verify successful tutoring by contacting a minimum of two students, parents or educators associated with the tutoring.
